Camera Work Reflection

When learning the process for camera work, it was very simple and fun, as well as straightforward. Remembering them was also easy. To add on, once i learned about different camera movements and shots, I am able to identify them in movies and shows which i love.

In my project for camera movements, we made a short comedic story and I had a lot of fun making it with my friends. We made sure to get all the camera movements required within our short comedy story and the assignment requiring us to use those movements made it even more fun, like a challenge. Likewise, it was the same with the camera shot project. We used inanimate objects and took pictures with different angles to tell a story about glue sticks. We were able to go outside and take pictures, which gave us endless possibilities. Overall both projects were fun and really showed how a camera movement and shot can affect the mood and feeling of a scene within a story.

Some challenges we had was making sure we ticked off every required camera movement and shot. Sometimes we would realize that the movement would not work, and we would have to come up with something new, whether it be in terms of the plot or the movement. As for the camera shot project, some challenges we had were bring the shots we had planned to life. Some shots were more difficult than others and it would look different on screen once the picture was taken, which meant we had to adjust slightly multiple times for some shots. Some successes we had was how once we were finished with both stories, we would look over them and see the beautiful creation that we made. With the movement project, we were able to get a good laugh out of our bad acting, but we saw how the different movements created the story. Its very satisfying to see your creation come together at the end and have it convey or show what you intended it to. We also had many shots and movements come out better than we expected, which would always surprise us.

Throughout the process of completing the project, I learned how to create a story using only camera movements or camera shots. I now know which shots and movements convey what feelings, as well as how to make a simple story feel deeper and more alive. In addition, I also learned how to cooperate with others and their ideas while creating the story. These things i've learned are essential not only for media studies, but for the rest of my life.

Next time, what i would do differently for the projects would be to try and incorporate faces onto the objects that we used as characters. I can do this by getting creative and using paper to put faces and create emotions for the objects. As for the camera movement project, i could try and create a different vibe and type of story. Maybe instead of a comical story, i could do something filled with suspense, creating a dramatic and intense story with no words.
